At 32 years of age, Grace Metalious composed the blockbuster novel Peyton Place. It changed the distributing business and made the creator one of the most discussed individuals in the country. Metalious expounded on interbreeding, fetus removal, sex, assault, infidelity, constraint, desire, and the privileged insights of unassuming community New England, things that were never talked about in traditionalist America. She deciphered inbreeding, spouse beating, and destitution as social disappointments rather than singular lemon. When Metalious distributed Peyton Place, the nation was in the grip of another flood of sexual frenzy. The book turned the ?private? into the ?political.? The cutting edge upset the nation and pundits called the book ?fiendish,? ?corrupt,? furthermore, ?modest.? Canada pronounced it profane and made the importation of the book unlawful. Portions of Rhode Island, Indiana, and Nebraska stuck to this same pattern contending that the book would degenerate youthful personalities. Rich people group exiled Peyton Place. To peruse Peyton Place was to peruse it stealthily and were some of the time talked about just among the nearest of companions. Everybody was perusing it ? school and secondary school understudies, school graduates, moms, spouses, and even husbands and fathers. In 1956, a sexual demonstration, for example, homosexuality, oral sex, and intercourse with another wedded individual in many states was illicit. Additionally, fetus removal was unlawful, and anti-conception medication was inconsistent and by and large, hard to track down. To numerous pundits, Metalious' book was not shocking a result of its for example, but since of the sexual delights that were gotten and given by the female characters. Peyton Place starts with Indian summer in 1939. It happens in a clear, postcardesque New England town. The principle story centers around three ladies characters and their hidden quest for their ways of life as sexual ladies in unassuming community America. Allison Mackenzie is the charlatan little girl of Constance Mackenzie who took part in an extramarital entanglements with a wedded man. She wrongfully changed Allison's introduction to the world authentication and misled the Peyton Place local people that her better half kicked the bucket. Connie didn't need any of the town people to discover reality that the dad of her kid was a hitched man since she would turn into the town tattle of criticism. She stayed discreet to herself, and just to herself until a contention among her and Allison happened when Connie thought Allison was engaging in sexual relations with one of her companions, thus she lashed out reality to Allison. As a youngster, Allison was constantly prodded about being puerile, and not intrigued by young men, and consistently into books. Be that as it may, as she grew up she was brimming with clashing sexual feelings, and in the wake of graduating secondary school, she left Peyton Place to seek after a composing vocation in New York. Connie Mackenzie, to her neighbors, was a lovely, youthful, widow that possessed her own second hand shop. Numerous qualified lone wolves Everyone had a craving for her and wished to have her, until Thomas Makris, an educator from New York City shows up into town to take the activity of dean at the Peyton Place grade school. Thomas seeks after Connie and panicked that he knows her mystery, she maintains a strategic distance from him. He appears at her home one night and convinces her to a date, which prompts him assaulting her. They remain together and end up in marriage. As the third principle female character, Selena Cross is presumably the most noteworthy. She was a similar age as Allison. She lived in a shack wit h her younger sibling Joey, unhinged mother and alcoholic stepfather, Lucas Cross. She carried on with an oppressive existence with Lucas drinking, beating her mom, beating her, and explicitly abusing her. He gets Selena pregnant and she furtively gets an illicit fetus removal from the town specialist, who powers Lucas to vanish from Peyton Place and never return or everybody will comprehend what he did to his girl. Selena works at Connie's store and becomes administrator when her mom, stricken with malignancy, ends it all. In 1944, during a blizzard, Lucas Cross, presently part of the U.S. Naval force, appears at Selena's home alcoholic and hitting on her. They were invited by Montezuma, the relentless Tlatoani (ruler) of his kin. After seven months, Montezuma was dead, conceivably because of his own kin. What befell the Emperor of the Aztecs? Montezuma II Xocoyotzã n, Emperor of the Aztecs Montezuma had been chosen to be Tlatoani (the word implies speaker) in 1502, the most extreme pioneer of his kin: his granddad, father and two uncles had likewise been tlatoque (plural of tlatoani). From 1502 to 1519, Montezuma had demonstrated himself to be a capable pioneer in war, governmental issues, religion, and strategy. He had kept up and extended the domain and was master of terrains extending from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Many vanquished vassal clans sent the Aztecs merchandise, food, weapons, and even slaves and caught warriors for penance. Cortes and the Invasion of Mexico In 1519, Hernan Cortes and 600 Spanish conquistadors arrived on Mexicos Gulf coast, setting up a base close to the present-day city of Veracruz. They started gradually advancing inland, gathering knowledge through Cortes translator/fancy woman Doã ±a Marina (Malinche). They become a close acquaintence with displeased vassals of the Mexica and made a significant coalition with the Tlaxcalans, severe adversaries of the Aztecs. They showed up in Tenochtitlan in November and were at first invited by Montezuma and his high ranking representatives. Catch of Montezuma The abundance of Tenochtitlan was dumbfounding, and Cortes and his lieutenants started plotting how to take the city. The vast majority of their arrangements included catching Montezuma and holding him until more fortifications could show up to make sure about the city. On November 14, 1519, they got the reason they required. A Spanish army left on the coast had been assaulted by certain delegates of the Mexica and a few of them were murdered. Cortes masterminded a gathering with Montezuma, blamed him for arranging the assault, and arrested him. Incredibly, Montezuma concurred, if he have the option to recount to the story that he had willfully went with the Spanish back to the royal residence where they were held up. Montezuma Captive Montezuma was still permitted to see his guides and take an interest in his strict obligations, however just with Cortes consent. He showed Cortes and his lieutenants to play customary Mexica games and even took them chasing outside of the city. Montezuma appeared to build up a kind of Stockholm Syndrome, in which he got to know and identified with his captor, Cortes: when his nephew Cacama, master of Texcoco, plotted against the Spanish, Montezuma knew about it and educated Cortes, who took Cacama prisoner. In the interim, the Spanish consistently goaded Montezuma for increasingly gold. The Mexica for the most part esteemed splendid quills more than gold, such a large amount of the gold in the city was given over to the Spanish. Montezuma even arranged the vassal conditions of the Mexica to send gold, and the Spaniards amassed an incomprehensible fortune: it is assessed that by May they had gathered eight tons of gold and silver. Slaughter of Toxcatl and Return of Cortes In May of 1520, Cortes needed to go to the coast with the same number of officers as he could extra to manage a military drove by Panfilo de Narvaez. Unbeknownst to Cortes, Montezuma had gone into a mystery correspondence with Narvez and had requested his beach front vassals to help him. At the point when Cortes discovered, he was incensed, extraordinarily stressing his relationship with Montezuma. Cortes left his lieutenant Pedro de Alvarado accountable for Montezuma, other illustrious prisoners and the city of Tenochtitlan. When Cortes was gone, the individuals of Tenochtitlan got anxious, and Alvarado knew about a plot to kill the Spanish. He requested his men to assault during the celebration of Toxcatl on May 20, 1520. A huge number of unarmed Mexica, a large portion of the individuals from the respectability, were butchered. Alvarado likewise requested the homicide of a few significant rulers held in imprisonment, including Cacama. The individuals of Tenochtitlan were enraged and assaulted the Spaniards, driving them to blockade themselves inside the Palace of Axaycatl. Cortes crushed Narvaez in fight and added his men to his own. On June 24, this bigger armed force came back to Tenochtitlan and had the option to strengthen Alvarado and his beset men. Demise of Montezuma Cortes came back to a castle under attack. Cortes couldn't reestablish request, and the Spanish were starving, as the market had shut. Cortes requested Montezuma to revive the market, however the sovereign said that he couldn't on the grounds that he was a hostage and nobody tuned in to his requests any longer. He proposed that if Cortes liberated his sibling Cuitlahuac, likewise held detainee, he may have the option to get the business sectors to revive. Cortes let Cuitlahuac go, yet as opposed to reviving the market, the warlike ruler composed a considerably fiercer assault on the blockaded Spaniards.â Unfit to reestablish request, Cortes had a hesitant Montezuma pulled to the top of the royal residence, where he begged his kin to quit assaulting the Spanish. Chafed, the individuals of Tenochtitlan tossed stones and lances at Montezuma, who was seriously injured before the Spanish had the option to bring him back inside the royal residence. As per Spanish records, a few days after the fact, on June 29, Montezuma passed on of his injuries. He addressed Cortes before passing on and solicited him to take care from his enduring youngsters. As per local records, Montezuma endure his injuries however was killed by the Spanish when it turned out to be evident that he was of no further use to them. Today is difficult to decide precisely how Montezuma kicked the bucket. Fallout of Montezuma's Death With Montezuma dead, Cortes understood that there was no chance he could hold the city. On June 30, 1520, Cortes and his men attempted to escape Tenochtitlan under front of obscurity. They were spotted, be that as it may, and wave after rush of furious Mexica warriors assaulted the Spaniards escaping over the Tacuba boulevard. Around 600 Spaniards (generally 50% of Cortes armed force) were murdered, alongside the greater part of his ponies. Two of Montezumas kids - which Cortes had quite recently vowed to secure - were killed close by the Spaniards.à Some Spaniards were caught alive and yielded to the Aztec divine beings. About the entirety of the fortune was gone too. The Spanish alluded to this awful withdraw as the Night of Sorrows. A couple of months after the fact, strengthened by more conquistadors and Tlaxcalans, the Spanish would re-take the city, this time for good. Five centuries after his passing, numerous cutting edge Mexicans despite everything censure Montezuma for poor authority which prompted the fall of the Aztec Empire. The conditions of his bondage and passing have a lot to do with this. Had Montezuma wouldn't permit himself to be abducted, history would no doubt have been totally different. Most present day Mexicans have little regard for Montezuma, inclining toward the two chiefs who came after him, Cuitlahuac and Cuauhtã ©moc, both of whom battled the Spanish wildly. Now you want to fix your financial life by finding a better paying job.Unfortunately, weâve got some bummer news. That new job youâre applying for to help you fix your bad credit? Your bad credit could keep you from getting it!Is that fair? Not at all. Itâs a terrible, vicious cycle. But youâre better off knowing the obstacles youâll face so you can be prepared. We spoke to the experts to bring you the truth about how your credit can affect your job prospects and what you can do to overcome it.How big is the risk?We know that potential employers CAN check your credit history when determining if they want to hire you, but WILL they? According to the experts we talked to, its certainly a factor that employers may consider, but isnât necessarily a standard hiring practice.Leadership coach Elizabeth McCourt told us that a potential employeeâs money situation has always been a factor in her particular sector of experience:âAs a recruiter in the financial services industry, I can tell you that having a clean financial record is very important. If there is a bankruptcy in your past or other credit issues, there is a high probability that this will affect the chances of getting a job offer. Particularly in the financial services business, there are strict compliance rules and firms see credit or finance issues as a potential red flag for problems down the road. Financial issues or bad credit score are almost always a road block into this particular industry.âOutside of the finance sphere, itâs an issue youâre somewhat less likely to run into. Roy Cohen, career coach and author of The Wall Street Professionalâs Survival Guide, could only recall one client running into an issue like this: âOnly once in my (very long) career has a client been rejected for a job because of a bad credit report. We later discovered that the firm was about to announce a reduction in force. So, we were actually uncertain if, under different circumstances, he could have successfully talked his way out of losing the job offer.âCohen did acknowledge, however, that itâs more likely to be an issue when applying for jobs that require money handling. He told us âthe only exceptionâ is âjobs in which the employee handles money, has credit authority, or makes decisions about the disbursement of funds.â He went as far as to say âWhen clients with credit problems reach out to me I typically discourage them from pursuing an option where I know they will be rejected. It simply makes zero sense. So failure and rejection have been mitigated.âConsumer rights attorney Larry P. Smith explained that even if a potential employer isnât looking at your credit history specifically, they may still pull your credit report: âA credit score can affect your job chances by getting you denied employment. There are limited reasons why someone c an obtain a credit report or consumer report about a person. One of those reasons is to review an employment candidate. In most instances, employers obtaining reports about employees are not obtaining credit information. Rather, they are obtaining other background informationâ"such as arrest or conviction records. Those reports are similarly governed by the Fair Credit Reporting Act. However, some employers do seek out credit information about job candidates. In some industries, employers are concerned about having employees with a solid credit background. If someone is being hired to handle money or will be around money, then an employer may be concerned that the person is responsible with money or not desperately broke where they can be a danger of stealing. In those instances, an employer can review a credit report, note a low score, and deny them employment based upon that. Note that there are certain legal requirements that come with rejecting a potential employee based in who le or in part on information contained in a credit report.âSmith did assure us, however, that there are states in which a potential employer is restricted from rejecting you based on your credit: âSome states have enacted laws to cover this and provide that it is illegal to review credit information of a potential employee before hiring. However, there are some caveats to those statutes. First, most of those statutes also provide for an exception to the rule if the person is applying for employment in the financial sector or at a job where money is being handled. Second, the federal FCRA preempts any state law. That is, if it is inconsistent with the federal law, then it is a null and void law. Many states have come into conflict with the federal law, and as such, we caution to rely on the federal law. The FCRA allows potential employers to review credit reports and make employment decisions based thereon.âHow can you protect yourself? No matter how small or large the risk migh t be, it pays to be prepared. Youâd rather have a strategy in case your credit comes up than try to explain how you didnât think they would check.Hereâs what Cohen recommends: âDisaster planning is effective. When you anticipate the very worst that could happen and prepare various likely scenarios, you are in a better position to either present the problem up front or offer up a reasonable explanation. Most credit problems have a legitimate origin, like a medical problem or divorce. Many of the companies that use credit reports are willing to overlook the issue as long as it doesnt appear to be a pattern of behavior. Besides, in at least 10 or more states it is illegal for companies to request or use credit history in making a decision to hire a prospective employee.âLife coach Jeff Altman told us what you should do if youâre worried your bad credit might keep you from a job:âIf you know there is a risk of a problem (for example, if you are interviewing for a job with a bank or a financial institution that you know will do a review of your credit score), it is better to be proactive with HR during your interviews to see whether or not the impact of having a poor credit score is, âterminal.ââAfter all, why go through so many interviews and the heartache of rejection at the end if you will be turned down no matter what you do or say?âYou can talk about how your wife/husband/partner had a business fail and how it affected the two of you. You can talk about how the two of you have been working to get out from under. You can speak about the effects of medical bills, being unable to find the job for a lengthy period of time, or any other cause that has resulted in poor credit showing up on a report.âAnd if they donât listen?âIf a firm is going to be heartless at the beginning, I can assure you they will be heartless at the end.â (You can also read more of Jeffs thoughts about credit and job hunting in our previous blog entry How Fixing Your Credit Can Fix Your Future.)You canât repair bad credit in a night. In the beginning Nora is seen as woman who cares about her children and her husband but someone who also cares greatly about money. Torvald is seen as a man who is important in the society. Nora was portrayed as a very caring wife when it is revealed that she borrowed money illegally from Krogstad to fund the trip to Italy to try and save her husband life because he was sick. This is similar to Nora when she broke up with Torvald she felt that she was her fatherââ¬â¢s doll and then she became Torvalds doll when they married. Della makes a sacrifice of cutting her long and beautiful hair so that she could have the money to buy her husband a chain for his watch. Blood consists of cells that are suspended in a liquid. As with other suspensions, the components of blood can be separated by filtration. However, the most common method of separating blood is to centrifuge (spin) it. Three layers are visible in centrifuged blood. The straw-colored liquid portion, called plasma, forms at the top (~55%). The buffy coat, a thin cream-colored layer consisting of white blood cells and platelets forms below the plasma, while red blood cells comprise the heavy bottom portion of the separated mixture (~45%). What Is the Volume of Blood? Blood volume is variable but tends to be about 8% of body weight. Factors such as body size, the amount of adipose tissue, and electrolyte concentrations all affect blood volume. The average adult has about 5 liters of blood. What Is the Composition of Blood? Blood consists of cellular material (99% red blood cells, with white blood cells and platelets making up the remainder), water, amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, hormones, vitamins, electrolytes, dissolved gasses, and cellular wastes. Each red blood cell is about one-third hemoglobin, by volume. Plasma is about 92% water, with plasma proteins as the most abundant solutes. The main plasma protein groups are albumins, globulins, and fibrinogens. The primary blood gasses are oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. If a farmer gives antibiotics to an animal, he loses his certificate for organic farming and he has to start all over and earn his certificate again. Growth hormones are also not used in organic animal husbandry. The concept of being organic is by no means a new thing. Answer: Introduction Social media networking refers to the use of social media channels for communicating advertisement message to the target customers. The social media communication has several disadvantages and advantages and the business organizations struggle to find the best manner to use them. The presence of the internet-based social media has made it possible for a single person to communicate with the thousands of people all across the people. The social media provides immense opportunity for an organization to present itself and its products in a dynamic manner so that the communities and individuals remains interested. In social media networks, the companies can use a number of methods such as post, tags and blogs to post and attract potential customers. The content developed by the social media can be defined as a newly generated resource of online information, which the users create, spread and use to educate each other about the attributes and qualities of different consumer products. Due to its use of use, speed and reach, social media has become an essential part of the marketing strategy of the organizations. Moreover, social media promotions, marketing intelligence, sentiment research, public relations and customer management are the sub-disciplines of marketing (Christou, 2016). In this regard, the present literature review examines the role of benefits and the drawbacks of social media for the hotel service industry. Benefits of Social Media Marketing Hensel and Deis (2010) has discussed the benefits of using social media marketing methods for driving the profit ration and sales of an organization. The social media has become the driving force in the information age wherein the general public has attained the capability to create and consumer information and immediately distribute it on the internet. Different social media such as Facebook, MySpace and Youtube provides the business organizations with the opportunity to instantly connect with their customers and create a buzz regarding the new product. The literature has cited that after Faacebook, blogging is the most common tool for networking and social media tools. Online communities are also beneficial for the business organization as they provide cross-selling opportunities to different user groups who share same user platform. The business organizations cannot ignore social media marketing due to its immense benefits. It is commonly used by the consumers to take opinions of millions of other consumers. A large number of business organizations device strategies to influence the public opinion to drive its sales. The consumers can share ideas, photos, and video with social media. The business organizations have also realized that with the increased interaction with the social media websites, the companies can effectively meet the demand of their consumers. In the views of Mangold and Faulds (2009) has stated that with the emergence of the social media the traditional promotional techniques have changed. The social media can also be referred as consumer-generated media which refers to the variety of sources of online information which is created, initiated, generated and circulated online. Social media entails variety of online platforms such as blogs, company-sponsored discussions, chat rooms, consumer product or service ratings and internet discussion boards. The authors have similar views to Hensel and Deis (2010) regarding the use of social media and its benefits for the business organizations. However, the authors discuss the manner in which social media marketing is different from the traditional mediums of marketing communication. The literature cites that in contrast to the traditional marketing mediums, wherein the marketers possessed all the control over the marketing communication, the marketer possesses little control over s ocial media channels. In the views of Kaske, Kugler Smolnik (2012), with the increased popularity of the social media the companies are extensively using it for increasing their customer base. The business executives are challenged by trade-offs between different marketing initiatives. The decision of the marketing executives is based on the profit maximization of the organization. If the long term benefits of the social media are more than the cost, it will certainly be implemented by the organizations. Similar to the above discussions, it can be cited that the social media marketing methods can be used to increase the customer outreach, improved business generation, increased customer loyalty, improved customer satisfaction and avoidance of customer dissatisfaction. The most important benefit of the social media is that it has a relatively greater outreach with low costs. Pollock Rindova (2003) has discussed that social media platforms assist the business organizations to achieve greater sales as they assist the organization for direct call for action and access to the target market. Several companies have used social media for crowdsourcing and showcasing available discounts. The social media interaction also assists the companies in enhanced customer retention and increased customer loyalty. The companies can actively participate and steer communication with a large number of customers. Other than that, the companies can create a specific sphere of influence which can be created by the social media. Before the digital age, the customers opinion has minimum impact on the market dynamics. Social media is also critical in monitoring customer-to-customer communication and intervene when necessary. The word of mouth is considered as one of most persuasive form of promotion. The social media is also essential in increasing the transparency, enhancing the customers experience, analysing the feelings of the customers towards the product. Social media is also essential to reduce the market inefficiencies and increase the positively increase the competitiveness of the market. Vries, Gensler Leeflang, (2012) the investment the companies need to obtain new customers is much higher than investment in retaining the older ones. Therefore, retaining customers is beneficial for the companies. The companies can achieve high retention by linking brand to the social networks. The companies can also focus on resolving the customer issues as soon as they appear online to increase the customer loyalty. Improved customer communication is a qualitative advantage which can increase the social media visibility, permanence and reach to the customers. Drawbacks and Challenges in Social Media Marketing in Hotel Industry Minazzi (2014) has discussed that the major disadvantage of the social media is may spread outrage, discontent and ridicule among the employees. Therefore, it is important that the organization use social media monitoring to examine he customer satisfaction and avoid customer loss of trust and image. Verma, Stock and McCarthy (2012) have stated that in the hospitality industry, the customers heavily rely on the internet ratings and the feedback of the customers selecting the hotel for stay. The business and the leisure travellers both follow the recommendations of the fellow travellers as well as rely on the search engines to know more about the available hotels. The social media influences the marketing and the distribution on the hospitality industry. In this regard, it can be evaluated that the hospitality operators find it challenging to meet the standards of the international rating system and need to promptly respond to the queries and the comments of the social media experts. The literature has cited that traditionally, the most powerful marketing tool is word-of-mouth between the customers and the social media is an extension of this human network. The major challenge for the business organization with the arrival of the social media marketing is that the company has to r emain familiar with the latest patterns in the social media marketing and establish an attractive website to draw the interest of new customers. The search pattern of the customers initiates with the search of the hotels in the traditional search engines; later, the customers are search for the website of the company. If the website of the company is filled with negative reviews, it can reduce the customers to the company. The customer reviews can impact negatively on the willingness of the customers to book the hotel. According to the literature, the most significant challenge for the organization is fake reviews and feedback from the competing companies. It can be analysed that with the recent advent of the m-commerce and the smartphones, the customer reliance on the social media is increasing constantly. In regard to the business and the leisure travellers, it can be observed that location based innovations such as finding information about the services, directions to the establishment and the ability to make reservations in the organization has a positive impact on attracting the customers to the organization. The companies can use communication-based innovations such as text message, alerts, voice mails and wake up calls to increase the customer satisfaction. Noone, McGuire, Rohlfs (2011) have stated that the companies in the hotel industry are finding is difficult to keep up with the changing consumer demands. Although a large number of companies have adopted social media channels as a marketing strategy, the companies are yet to completely realize the full potential of the social media marketing on the marketing activities. The social media marketing is an effective strategy for customer acquisition and retention; however, there are several key issues which are needed to be considered in the development of social media marketing strategy. The company has to assure that its social media marketing strategy aligns and works in a coordinated manner with the sales and marketing activities of the organization. It is important for their effectiveness. Moreover, the companies should also consider whether they need a separate strategy for brand, owners and the corporate organizations. Another significant challenge is that the field of social media marketing is relatively new field and there are no experts available. The communicators have little knowledge regarding the property, location and the brand which can create discrepancies in the message transmitted to the customers. In the social media marketing, there should be in-house experts who have knowledge of the social media marketing. The companies can outsource the social media marketing activities to reduce the cost of the organization. According to Maha (2015), other issues in the social media marketing is that the web pages of most of the companies is not optimized. The hotel page should redirect the visitors to their official Facebook page, Twitter account and YouTube account. When the companys website is not linked with the social media page of the company, it is reducing the number of potential customers for the organization. Another mistake that the business organization perform is not to stay active at their official social media pages. Although, it is not necessary to always stay active at the social media pages, the companies should daily post attractive posts and videos on the social media. Gordon (2014) posits that hoteliers should maintain a positive attitude for the customers even when they are negative. It is observed that several times, the managers use rude or accusatory tones to the customers who have provided negative reviews and feedback. In this case, the organizations should focus on creating positivity from the negative reviews. They should be able to satisfy the negative customers and understand their needs and requirements by positively communicating with the customers. The companies also need to conduct research regarding the websites and the social media pages of the competing organizations. In the hotel industry, most of the companies create websites which are attractive and incomplete. Gonzalo (2012) has discussed that most of the business organizations have failed to integrate the social media marketing strategy in the business processes of the organization. It is important for the companies to understand that social media cannot be used singularly for marketing purpose. When the company is declaring something about the shareholders or community relations, it related to the public affairs. When the conversation is related to the corporate culture or the business to business sales, it is a matter of human resource and sales of the organization. It is important for the business organizations to understand that social media marketing is associated with several other divisions of business management. According to Pike (2015) another challenge in the social media marketing in the hotel industry is to remain consistent with the content. In the hotel industry, there is a lot of content available and the companies can daily churn out a large number of articles. However, the major challenge for the companies is to remain consistent with the matter and relate with the customers. In order to resonate with the customers and built a desire for the product or the service, the companies need an in-depth approach which provides quality content to the customers and increase their understanding of the priorities. In order to develop a successful social media marketing strategy, the companies need to develop clear and measurable objectives for the organization. The social media marketing should be developed after the clear analysis of the business objectives and targets. In the strategy development, the companies need to identify the target audience and the social media which can assist it is a chieving the goals of the organization. Summary It can be summarized that the social media marketing is an innovative and attractive method to attract large number of customers. It has wide outreach, cheap and can instantly connect with the target audience. However, there are several drawbacks of using the social media marketing activities. It is relatively new field, thus lacks experienced professionals. Moreover, the companies also struggle with the negative feedbacks and updating the website to provide a clear and consistent message. This meant that anything I did not believe to be one hundred percent true was just useless information. I also believed that truth can only be obtained through evidence or proof. In simpler terms, I would have been classified as purely a scientific type of knower. That meant that I required evidence for every piece of information I encountered in order for me to consider it as knowledge. An example of this would have been me not taking in everything my parents tell me as pure knowledge immediately. This meant that I would always try to verify whatever they tell me with books or with experts like doctors. Moreover, as a scientific type of knower I always expected certainty with everything that I considered as knowledge. Since, I always required certainty with my knowledge I believed there was only one way of acquiring knowledge and that is usually through authorities/experts like doctors and teachers for example. In other words, I would usually obtain what I believed as knowledge through scientific journals ,books, teachers at school and everything they teach me, and other professionals. Furthermore, by being more of a kind of a scientific type of knower I was also more interested in acquiring knowledge that was more of a scientific or mathematical nature and less of an artistic nature. In brief, even though acquiring knowledge in only one way may simplify life it also presents many problems. The problem of only acquiring in one way could be summarized in this quote by Bertolt Brecht A man with only one theory is a lost man. I myself, never truly acknowledged the problems of acquiring knowledge in only one way until I began taking TOK a few weeks ago. The thing that changed me the most were the questions that was given to me on the second week. These questions like How did you know your best friend or How do you know you are in danger really couldnt had been answered by knowledge from experts or though verification. Instead, I finally learned to realize the importance of other ways of acquiring knowledge like through experience and instincts in these cases. Additionally, the learning of knowledge issues like biases also made me reconsider my belief that I should always believe experts and that they are always right. Last of all, TOK have already taught me to look at knowledge at different perspectives and not only with one and that had made me realize the importance of other forms of knowledge like the arts.à All in all, TOK have already changed me as a knower and that would continue to evolve as I have only skimmed the very surface of this course. While many say that it is just a game others, like myself, think that a computer can be as destructive as loading a gun and giving it to a toddler. This is because teens across the globe are playing horribly realistic video games with sadistic themes of violence, sex and drugs, not only that but some children are mimicking the actions of the games in real life, a sort of twisted reality lived out at a school in Columbine America. Also the fact that the government is even thinking of bringing out an R rated category so that children can play more violent games than usual is just astounding. The American government has investigated into these Murder Simulators and has found that some games do encourage aggressive behavior, some are such good teaching tools of destruction that the Australian army is using them as training tools, these are now being sold to the public to ANYONE. Some computer games that are being sold at such family orientated shops such as Target, Myer and K-mart are so graphically realistic that one could almost mistake it for reality. If that isnt bad enough the problem is that they can only get more realistic, while the technology of PCs advances its graphics capabilities boom enabling it to be more realistic than ever before. The realistic surrounds of everyday life added with the soul purposes to kill everyone, deal elicit substances and to Pimp women on the streets is just too much for the average ten year old to handle without being affected in an unacceptable way. It proved too much to two young American students at the Columbine high school in the USA. When compared through the effective rate of interest, the high interest saving account only provides up to 0.02% higher than the nominal interest rate of 2%. The two short term investments were then evaluated through future value analysis as well. The future value calculated for the Certificate of Deposit came out to be $2,030.15 which is $30.15 higher than the present value of $2,000 invested at the beginning of the six month period. In comparison to the Certificate of Deposit, the future value earned in the high interest saving account was $4,020.05 which is only $20.05 higher from the investment amount which was $4,000 for six months. This clearly indicates that the Certificate of Deposit is a better short term investment opportunity for the organization than the high interest saving account. There are various analyses which can be conducted on short term investment opportunities. A number of opportunities can be utilized in a combination as well to provide large savings for the organization. The main concept behind any short or long term investment is the investment objectives of the organization. If the organization believes in liquidity and requires ready cash then the best options would be those that help liquidate investments immediately. In that context high interest saving accounts may be a better choice than certificates of deposit, if high interest saving accounts do not have a conditional drawing clause. On the other hand, if the organization believes in saving rather than liquidity, then certificates of deposit would be a better choice in the short term where the money is fixed and cannot be drawn for the next six Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02072117275305138062noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6083856300450413113.post-812476471510060362020-02-05T22:58:00.001-08:002020-02-05T22:58:03.647-08:00Google Documents Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 wordsGoogle Documents - Essay Example It eliminates the need to e-mail documents to share with others and it can also be edited online by the shared users of the documents. Some greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, occur naturally and are emitted into the air through natural processes and human activity. Other greenhouse gases are emitted only through human activity. These include ââ¬Å"carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and fluorinated gasesâ⬠(Environmental Protection Agency, 1). Carbon dioxide is emitted through the burning of fossil fuels as well as through solid waste and tree and wood products. Methane is emitted during the transport of coal, natural gas and oil. Nitrous oxide is emitted during agricultural and industrial activities. Fluorinated gases are emitted through a variety of industrial processes (Environmental Protection Agency, 1). These are all dangerous emissions that have a serious impact on the integrity of the environment. However, there are many natural processes that can cause an emission of greenhouse gases and these get far less attention than those associated with human activity. ââ¬Å"Cattle numbers have more than tripled in the last ten yearsâ⬠(Hao, et al, 376). An analysis of the greenhouse gas emissions of these increasing cattle herds as compared to automobiles and planes is offered. The Problem with Cattle ââ¬Å"Associated with intensification of livestock operations in an increased amount of feedlot manure produced each yearâ⬠(Hao, et al, 376). Typically, cattle manure is disposed of by applying it directly to fields. ââ¬Å"However, this has created environmental concernsâ⬠(Hao, et al, 376). Composting manure before applying it to fields has been suggested as an alternative because it ââ¬Å"reduces odor, pathogens, weeds and fly breeding potentialâ⬠(Hao, et al, 376). However, it has also been shown that composting the manure before application ââ¬Å"contributes to emissions of greenhouse gasesâ⬠(Hao, et al, 376). The process of composting the manure results in an increase in several different gases including methane and carbon dioxide. As the manure is composted, ââ¬Å"heat is generated and the temperature of the compost increases. â⬠As the temperature increases, greenhouse gas emissions also increase (Hao, et al, 384). Finally, ââ¬Å"composted manure can be trucked further distancesâ⬠which also adds to the overall greenhouse gas emissions associated with cattle manure (Hao, et al, 376). It is the by products of the cattle that cause a large part of the overall greenhouse gas emissions related to the livestock trade. The chemical composition of the by products are what contribute to an increase in greenhouse gases. Therefore, as cattle herds increase so does their by products which, in turn, increases gas emissions. ââ¬Å"Globally, methane emissions from cattle are five to six percent of total emissions while nitrogen emissions are seven percent of total emissionsâ⬠(Hao, et al, 37). As the cattle herds grow the amount of manure that is produces also grows and this results in an increase in overall greenhouse gas emissions over time. When manure is composted it is required to remain in one place over a long period of time. As the manure composts its temperature increases which only adds to the greenhouse gas emissions that comes from the manure Therefore, it can be shown that greenhouse gas emissions from cattle are larger than greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles and planes, particularly as the global number of cattle herds increases so does global output of methane and nitrogen. These greenhouse gas emissions are far more dangerous than the emissions from automobiles and planes. While sustainable development has received global attention it has ââ¬Å"limited influence on the transportation sectorâ⬠(Bartle, 214). While people all over the world are attempting to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by also reducing their driving and/or purchasing more efficient vehicles, the United States air industry ââ¬Å"is unsustainable and forecasted trends suggest that this problem will get worseâ⬠(Bartle, 214). Current pollution control policies do not adequately address the issues associated with greenhouse gas emissions and airplane use. However, there are many reforms and new policies being considered in order to make air travel more sustainable while also reducing total greenhouse gas emissions during flying. While automobile and airplane travel have the capacity and ability to find new and innovative ways to reduce their overall greenhouse gas emissions, this is much more difficult for the cattle industry given the rapid increases in cattle herd size as well as manure output. Further, livestock are a leading source of greenhouse gas emissions but much more emphasis is placed on how to reduce emissions from automobiles and airplanes and much less focus is placed on how to reduce emissions within the livestock field (LA Times, 1). The cattle and livestock industry contributes more ââ¬Å"silent and deadly emissionsâ⬠than the ââ¬Å"entire world transportation sectorâ⬠(LA Times, 1). Many politicians and environmentalists do not realize the enormous problem that cattle emissions really are and often scoff at how much greenhouse gas they emit ââ¬Å"but livestock emissions are no jokeâ⬠(LA Times, 1). Further, much of the focus is placed on carbon dioxide and the majority of people do not realize the negative implications of methane and nitrous oxide ââ¬â two major emissions from cattle. These two gases are more efficient at trapping heat in the environment than carbon dioxide is. Methane has ââ¬Å"twenty-one times the potential for heat generation than carbon dioxideâ⬠does and cows can produce up to ââ¬Å"one hundred thirty gallonsâ⬠of methane per cow per day (LA Times, 1). Environmentalists tend to focus more on the greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles and planes which downplays the role of the livestock industry. At the same time, the public is not aware of the problem. Livestock, particularly cattle, are responsible for ââ¬Å"eighteen percent of greenhouse gases worldwide ââ¬â more than all the planes, trains and automobiles on the planetâ⬠(LA Times, 1). The problem appears to be getting worse. As previously mentioned the cattle herd sizes are increasing. Similarly, as living standards across the globe increase so does ââ¬Å"a fondness for meat and dairyâ⬠(LA Times, 1). For example, meat consumption in the developing world doubled between 1980 and 2002 and it is expected to double again by 2050. ââ¬Å"That means the environmental damage of ranching would have to be cut in half just to keep emissions at their current, dangerous levelâ⬠(LA Times, 1). As more emphasis continues to be placed on the transportation sector, less emphasis is placed on the danger that the cattle emissions pose to the overall integrity of the environment. ââ¬Å"The global livestock sector is growing faster than any other agricultural sub sectorâ⬠(Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 1). ââ¬Å"It provides livelihoods to about 1. 3 billion people and contributes about 40 percent to global agricultural output and is an important ââ¬Å"source of renewable energy (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 1). While this type of growth is certainly good for farmers and their bottom line, it has negative implications with regards to the overall integrity of the planetââ¬â¢s environment. As cattle herds continue to grow larger the problem is only going to get worse. Therefore, it is essential that the livestock industry be made aware of their contribution to greenhouse gas emissions so they are able to research and implement solutions that will help reduce their impact on the planet. Recommendations As mentioned previously, ââ¬Å"the environmental costs per unit of livestock production must be cut by one half, just to avoid the level of damage worsening beyond its present levelâ⬠(Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 1). Manure is the primary source of greenhouse gas emissions, specifically methane and nitrous oxide. The cattle industry ââ¬Å"generates sixty-five percent of human related nitrous oxideâ⬠which has ââ¬Å"two hundred ninety-six times the Global Warming Potential than carbon dioxideâ⬠(Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 1). The cattle industry also accounts for ââ¬Å"thirty-seven percent of all human induced methaneâ⬠which has ââ¬Å"twenty-three times the Global Warming Potential than carbon dioxideâ⬠(Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 1). These high levels of greenhouse gas emissions from the cattle industry prove the importance of changes in order to reduce the impact that cattle has on the environment. The problem also takes much of the emphasis off of carbon dioxide and places it on methane and nitrous oxide since they have much more capability for damage. One suggestion is for human beings to begin ââ¬Å"cutting back on read meatâ⬠as this would reduce the high demand for cattle and lower overall greenhouse gas emissions (LA Times, 1). A similar effect would be reached through a reduction in overall dairy consumption. However, for health reasons this is not a popular or feasible recommendation the way that reducing red meat consumption is. Further, politicians and lobbyists are reluctant to take on the cattle industry because ââ¬Å"it is extremely hazardous for politicians to take on the U. S. beef industryâ⬠(LA Times, 1). Therefore, researchers are being forced to develop ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions even as the demand for meat and dairy continues to increase. Cows have ââ¬Å"four stomachsâ⬠and the ââ¬Å"first stomach is called the rumenâ⬠and this is where the methane problem lies (LA Times, 1). ââ¬Å"The bacteria in the rumen produce methaneâ⬠that is released through both ends of the cow (LA Times, 1). Scientists are currently working on a type of feed that are more ââ¬Å"energy efficient and generate less methaneâ⬠as well as experimenting in order to ââ¬Å"produce a less gassy breed of cattleâ⬠(LA Times, 1). As mentioned in the beginning of the paper, researchers are also scrambling to devise ways to reduce the contribution of manure to the overall greenhouse gas emission problem such as ââ¬Å"storage methods and temperatureâ⬠(LA Times, 1). This correlates with the research studies presented in the beginning of the paper because this research supports the notion that finding better storage methods and controlling the overall temperature of the manure can have a positive effect on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Conclusions The majority of attention has been placed on the role that automobiles and airplanes play in degrading the integrity of the environment. However, few people realize the negative impact that the livestock industry has on the overall quality of the environment. It is much harder to place blame on human activity associated with driving and flying and ignoring the impact that human activity with regards to eating has on the environment. As the demand for quality beef and dairy products continues to increase so will the greenhouse gases emitted by increasing numbers of cattle herds. Humans can help reduce this impact by cutting their red meat consumption and making more sustainable choices with regards to their eating habits. This can go a long way towards improving the situation while scientists work diligently towards creating a solution that will ensure that beef demands be met while also reducing overall impact on the earth. Tough animal rights laws have been passed to ensure the safety and future of a variety of species ranging from the domestic cat to the bald eagle. The development of Wetlands has been curtailed in an effort to protect our swamps and forests from extinction. Our educational system has implemented a program known as, English As a Second Language, which lends itself to the special needs of immigrants in our school systems. This program offers extra tutoring and extra time on tests for immigrants who primarily speak a language other than English. Dudley Scholarship and Bethel Foundation Scholarship, along with over twelve-hundred others, have been created exclusively for minorities in an effort to encourage furthering their education. A list of these scholarships can be found in Directory of Financial A ids for Minorities, 1993-1995. In an effort to promote equal opportunity in the work place, the United States Government adopted the Affirmative Action program, which forces companies to place a certain number of minorities within their work force. Now, some politicians and educators in this country want to make concessions for those Americans who have grown up learning to speak what some people call street slang, as opposed to speaking standard English, which at last I heard was still America's primary language. According to Caroline Boarder, a political columnist, a program known as Ebonics has been introduced in Oakland, Ca., as a way to bridge the gap between black English or bad English-speaking students and standard English-speaking students in an effort to raise reading and writing test scores of African Americans. She also states that the Oakland school board contends that this bridge is necessary because the speaking of Ebonics is genetically related to African Americans. ( Educators Sound Off on Ebonics, Washington Post, Jan 97) This hypothesis suggests that black students are incapable of learning the English language through conventional teaching methods, and we must devise an easier way to teach them. I encourage every tax paying American citizen to take a close look at this program; after all, it is you who will be paying the bill for its implementation. I agree with politicians and educators who have at least acknowledged the fact that our education system needs an effective way to instill proper English in all students across the country regardless of their race, but is Ebonics the answer? As a consequence, there has been a need for special education specialists to develop professionally to tackle the challenge of special needs children in order to produce a desired outcome. In this regard, this paper follows on my reflection on the professional development progress in terms of my benefits of the course and impact on my values, knowledge, skills and beliefs. To start with, it is important for me to acknowledge and appreciate that learner with special needs exhibits physical, sensory, learning, emotional, and cognitive inadequacies that hampered them from normal learning (Norlander, 2005). These inadequacies give the field of special education its distinctiveness and uniqueness as a special branch of education that deals with learners with special needs that are considered to be deviate them from the societal norm. I have also discovered that, special needs children have behaviors which fall into the more extreme behavioral categories. The extreme behavior exhibited by the children with special needs call for extended tolerance and understanding from a care giver or teacher than normal children. As a result, the children with special needs as I have learned, require special considerations, patience and more time than there normal counterparts. Therefore, these children at best they need personalized behavioral support from the teachers or instructors due to diversity of their needs. Evident to me is that there are various general changes in the field of special education in relation to attaining quality education for learners with special needs. First, despite existence of established laws since 19th century that aim at protect and guide Special education for students with special needs (McComas, 2007), these legislations have not yet been fully implemented nor have they been accorded required federal government support. Second, the policies and findings available to better educational outcomes for the students with special needs have not been functional because of limited resources needed for implementation due categorical funding accrued to IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) loophole to recognize special services provision cost (Norlander, 2005). Third, contrary to IDEA recommendations for Individualized Education Programs (IEP) special learners, proves to be difficult to implement for special education teachers because learnersââ¬â¢ needs are several and nature of their disabilities are diverse to be fully met. Fourth, parental involvement in designing and development of evaluation and consent to placement, IEP learning programs and proposed actions is seriously challenged by the fact the parents are ignorant of their rights yet they need to be involved. Fifth, despite learners with special needs desire to transit to normal class settings, the teachers deny them opportunity due to lack of modality to do so. And lastly, the requirement by IEP for the special education teachers to provide for socialization and mental health proves a tough task since instructors might not measure up to the needed know how and competencies required (McComas, 2007). I can sum the challenges that face special education field as those that are caused by constitutional, structural and fundamental issues that I believe can be addressed to improve special education outcomes. Professionally, there are a number of tangible and essential principles that I have gained in relation of instructional approach for learners with special needs. The critical content design and instructional areas of interest that can better education outcome is grounded in the following essential principles such as selection of a wide range of instructional and assessment strategies for special need learners while emphasizing on curriculum based assessment, progress monitoring and early intervention. Secondly, I realize there is need for special education instructors and teachers to differentiate between accommodations and modification in respect to their use in developing IEPs for these needy learners. Thirdly, special education stakeholders ought to understand the IEP process in accordance with IEP Resource Guide of 2004 (Norlander, 2005) in relation to IEPââ¬â¢s development, implementation, reviewing and updating to take into account societal dynamism. This third principle is vital in the sense that the quality outcome of any given program can only be guaranteed and enhanced by quality process denoting that ââ¬Å"process is priori of outcomeâ⬠. Fourth, since our globe is moving fast technology wise, therefore input of assistive technology in designing instruction to learners with special needs should be employed to improve content cues delivery by the teachers and content mastery by the learners. The above discussed principle are essential component that the professionals ought to use to enhance improved special education standards in regard to achieving resource based and leaner centered approach in teaching and learning of students with special needs. My new dimension of reasoning in regard to content delivery is centered on the use of effective communication as a vital tool of design for teaching students with special needs to attain effective learning. Am now of opinion that the role of effective communication in instructional practices of children with special need should be emphasized because learning is an interactive process that rely on communication utilization between the teacher and the learners. Therefore use of effective communication by professional teacher help to develop unique sense of confidence of students that facilitate classroom adjustment and studentsââ¬â¢ involvement and participation in the learning process. As a result, the special need students are motivated extrinsically for effective learning. Additionally, effective communication helps to arrest shyness and nervousness, thereby improving self image of special need student as they are to express their feelings expansive and better manner (McComas, 2007). Moreover, social adjustment aspect can too be catered for through effective communication enabling these children develop an impressive personality to be able to understand each other and their peers, be active learners, raise their performance in academics; thus lead them towards success path. Therefore, the essence of effective communication for the children content delivery and classroom interaction I will never ignored in the sense that it assists in elimination of learnersââ¬â¢ negative perception that they are stereotyped, stigmatized and discriminated against by society hampering their academic success. Moreover, classroom management by the teachers of children with special need is supposed to be more focused on the diverse needs exhibited by learners to achieve desired educational goals in line with IEPs. However, in the process of catering for the different needs of these students, as a teacher I should acknowledge the fact that children with special needs have extreme behaviors that requires tolerance, patience and understanding, therefore, I should be careful and avoid emotions while employing reason to be able to say no, to be firm, to ignore malicious overtures, to restricting rewards and punish bad behavior, and reinforcing the good behaviors. By doing this, as a teacher I shall have appropriate approach as far as balancing between instilling discipline and childââ¬â¢s cognitive, affective and psychomotor development. In conclusion, the paper has presented my personal reflection on the professional development in relation to special education training. My perception has changed by learning that there are many challenges facing special education. However, I believe that through constitutional and structural approaches, solutions will be found to enhance effective special education programs that carters for vast majority of students with special needs. Above, I have discovered critical aspects as creation of positive learning environment reflecting diversity, organizing class to allow student work independently along with personalized attention and relevance of teaching content and resources to provide for all learners with special needs as secrete and key to effective classroom management. As a consequence of such training, profession wise I have developed key competencies in instructional design and delivery, teaching skills, increased knowledge of other cultures, how to enhance my studentsââ¬â¢ experiences of other cultures, needed and necessary collaboration with others, language improvement, inter-cultural and diversity teaching and classroom management. Therefore, my professional contribution to improvement of special education means advocating for change accordance with IEPs, utilize learner centered learning (Norlander, 2005) while emphasizing on childââ¬â¢s growth and development, use of effective communication, involving and engaging learners in the learning process as much as possible. By doing this, then I shall be maximizing on the information gathered and skills acquired. Reference Norlander, A. K. (2005). Recently, research has given us a much better understanding of the relationship between what we earn and how we feel. Economists have been studying the links between income and happiness across nations, and psychologists have performed innumerable studies to discover our true feelings about money. Studies consistently show that people who agree with statements like ââ¬Å"You will buy things just because you want them,â⬠tend to be less satisfied with life, less happy, and more likely to be depressed. But, just like studies examining the connection between success and happiness, many of the findings are correlational. As a result we canââ¬â¢t say for sure thatâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Then, after about a week, the same participants were given back their own descriptions of their purchases and asked to reflect on it. Again, they were asked to report on their feelings in the moment. Comparing these two groups provided a way of comparing how participants felt about two different types of purchases. The results showed that participants felt better when they were contemplating their experiential purchases than their material purchases. Thinking about experience As a result of this experiment, Van Boven Gilovich predicted that people spend more time overall contemplating their experiential rather than material purchases. To test this out they asked participants to think about experiential and material purchases they were particularly happy with. Then they were asked which they thought about more often. The results clearly showed it was the experiential purchases people thought about more often (83%). Why do experiences fare better than possessions? It seems, then, that at some level we understand that our experiential purchases give us more pleasure than our material purchases. But why is that? Van Boven (2005) suggests three reasons: 1. Experiences improve with time (possessions donââ¬â¢t). The reason why experiences improve with time may be because it is possible to think about experiences in a more abstract manner than possessions. For example if you think back to a fantastic summer from your youth, you mightShow MoreRelatedMoney Cant Buy Happiness1223 Words à |à 5 PagesItââ¬â¢s Your Choice: Money or Happiness. I plan to find out how gang violence have changed over the last 90 years. Gang violence started during the early years of the Great Depression when the government had banned alcohol. The origin was in New York City and gangs were formed by the American Mafia. As years passed, the location of gangs had spread throughout the United States. It once was affiliated with alcohol, but now is affiliated with drugs and the race of the members had changed from European immigrants to hispanics and African Americans. I predict that gang violence will continue to happen and become very progressive over the course of time. Presently, it is one of the most vigorously advocated reforms discussed in law reviews, one of the most explosive political questions facing lawmakers, and one of the most provocative issues emerging before American courts. If same-sex marriage is legalized, it could be one of the most revolutionary policy decisions in the history of American family law. The potential consequences, positive or negative, for children, parents, same-sex couples, families, social structure public health, and the status of women are enormous. Given the importance of the issue, the value of comprehensive debate of the reasons for and against legalizing same-sex marriage should be obvious. Marriage is much more than merely a commitment to love one another. Aside from societal and religious conventions, marriage entails legally imposed financial responsibility and legally authorized financial benefits. Marriage provides automatic legal protections for the spouse, including medical visitation, succession of a deceased spouses property, as well as pension and other rights. When two adults desire to contract in the eyes of the law, as well a perhaps promise in the eyes of the Lord and their friends and family, to be responsible for the obligations of marriage as well as to enjoy its benefits, should the law prohibit their request merely because they are of the same gender? I intend to prove that because of Article IV of the United States Constitution, there is no reason why the federal government nor any state government should restrict marriage to a predefined heterosexual relationship. Marriage has changed throughout the years. In Western law, wives are now equal rather than subordinate partners; interracial marriage is now widely accepted, both in statute and in society; and marital failure itself, rather than the fault of one partner, may be grounds for a divorce. Societal change have been felt in marriages over the past 25 years as divorce rates have increased and have been integrated into even upper class families. Proposals to legalize same-sex marriage or to enact broad domestic partnership laws are currently being promoted by gay and lesbian activists, especially in Europe and North America. The trend in western European nations during the past decade has been to increase legal aid to homosexual relations and has included marriage benefits to some same-sex couples. For example, within the past six years, three Scandinavian countries have enacted domestic partnership laws allowing same-sex couples in which at least one partner is a citizen of the specified country therefore allowing many benefits that heterosexual marriages are given. In the Netherlands, the Parliament is considering domestic partnership status for same-sex couples, all major political parties favor recognizing same-sex relations, and more than a dozen towns have already done so. Finland provides governmental social benefits to same-sex partners. Belgium allows gay prisoners the right to have conjugal visits from same-sex partners. An overwhelming majority of European nations have granted partial legal status to homosexual relationships. The European Parliament also has passed a resolution calling for equal rights for gays and lesbians. In the United States, efforts to legalize same-sex domestic partnership have had some, limited success. The Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, Inc. reported that by mid-1995, thirty-six municipalities, eight counties, three states, five state agencies, and two federal agencies extended some benefits to, or registered for some official purposes, same-sex domestic partnerships. In 1994, the California legislature passed a domestic partnership bill that provided official state registration of same-sex couples and provided limited marital rights and privileges relating to hospital visitation, wills and estates, and powers of attorney. While Californias Governor Wilson eventually vetoed the bill, its passage by the legislature represented a notable political achievement for advocates of same-sex marriage. The most significant prospects for legalizing same-sex marriage in the near future are in Hawaii, where advocates of same-sex marriage have won a major judicial victory that could lead to the judicial legalization of same-sex marriage or to legislation authorizing same-sex domestic partnership in that state. In 1993, the Hawaii Supreme Court, in Baehr v. Lewin, vacated a state circuit court judgment dismissing same-sex marriage claims and ruled that Hawaiis marriage law allowing heterosexual, but not homosexual, couples to obtain marriage licenses constitutes sex discrimination under the state constitutions Equal Protection Clause and Equal Rights Amendment. The case began in 1991 when three same-sex couples who had been denied marriage licenses by the Hawaii Department of Health brought suit in state court against the . Ina twist of supreme irony, the designation applies much more literally to the legions ofpoverty-stricken sweatshop laborers worldwide who toil away under miserable conditionsto produce the snappy apparel that Americans purchase in droves on a daily basis. Conditioned by a media that places considerable emphasis on possessing a stylishwardrobe, the majority of U.S. consumers are far too awash in their own culture onethat is notorious for the value it places on material wealth to be sensitive to the plightof these indigent foreigners. And although the US medias fleeting scrutiny of sweatshopconditions five years ago did make the issue a greater part of the national consciousnessthan ever before, not enough people changed their buying habits as a result or at leastnot enough to make a dent in the all-important bottom line of guilty corporations. Indeed, major American retailers of clothing and other apparel products have not changed thisdespotic element of their business practices in the least despite the negative publicity; infact, they continue to exploit laborers in foreign, mostly Third-World countries to analarming degree. The scope of the problem is such that hundreds of residents in a town as small andisolated as Santa Cruz have at some point been employed in sweatshops in impoverishednations. Santa Cruz resident Lorenzo Hernandez endured years of mistreatment at aDoall Enterprises factory in El Salvador before immigrating with his wife and two sons toSanta Cruz in September, 2000. He now works full-time as a cook at Tony and AlbasPizza in Scotts Valley, and while he scarcely earns above minimum wage in his currentposition, it represents a substantial improvement to the abject conditions under which helabored for so many years in his home country. They treated us very badly (in ElSalvador), Hernandez said. I earned not enough to live on. My family could only buytwo shirts and pants (per person), and we were always hungry. I worked 14, 16 hours aday but still did not make enough. Hernandez speaks and moves with the languor of a man who has spent his entireadult life working 80-hour weeks at physically-taxing jobs for domineering bosses whoaccepted nothing short of continuous effort without complaint and gra nted onlyoccasional, monitored bathroom breaks. Years of constant use have rendered his handscallused, decrepit, and scattered with patches of scars and discoloration. His face ismarkedly cragged, his eyes convey a vacant though faintly sad quality, and his blackscalp is blotted by manifold gray strands of hair. He is only 34, but his rugged featuresand frail demeanor strikingly approximate those of a typical 60-year-old. I think my jobshave caused me to lose lots of time with my family in the future, he said of his prospectsto live a long, fulfilling life. We will write a custom essay on Sweatshop Labor: Wearing Thin specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now A National Labor Committee study conducted earlier this year revealed that theaverage Salvadoran family (4.3 people) requires an income of $287.21 per month. Hernandez earned just .60 cents an hour working for Doall only 51% of a basic basketof goods necessary to sustain life in relative poverty. His wife, herself a portrait offragility, worked odd jobs for meager wages to supplement the family income and ensureits survival. Hernandez story is a familiar one not only to those in his native country, but topeople in poor nations worldwide, some of whom face conditions even more desperatethan those endured by many Salvadorans. For instance, wages in Indonesia and Burmahave dropped to as low as what corresponds to nine cents per hour in the U.S. In Mexicogarment workers are paid a lowly average of .50-.54 cents per hour. In Thailand thatnumber is .65 per hour. In addition, many laborers are required to work in generally unhealthy anddangerous surroundings for outrageously-long hours. Ninety-six hour work weeks andfourteen-hour days are routine for employees in the garment industry, who, like theaforementioned Hernandez, often find themselves subject to the demands of tyrannicaland obdurate bosses charged with increasing levels of productivity at the expense of theirworkers welfare. They would yell at us every time they walked by, Hernandez said. Sometimes they would (physically) punish people with straps or sticks to make themwork harder. .u02156d970bd4b0735d056b371828bc26 , .u02156d970bd4b0735d056b371828bc26 .postImageUrl , .u02156d970bd4b0735d056b371828bc26 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u02156d970bd4b0735d056b371828bc26 , .u02156d970bd4b0735d056b371828bc26:hover , .u02156d970bd4b0735d056b371828bc26:visited , .u02156d970bd4b0735d056b371828bc26:active { border:0!important; } .u02156d970bd4b0735d056b371828bc26 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u02156d970bd4b0735d056b371828bc26 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u02156d970bd4b0735d056b371828bc26:active , .u02156d970bd4b0735d056b371828bc26:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u02156d970bd4b0735d056b371828bc26 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u02156d970bd4b0735d056b371828bc26 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u02156d970bd4b0735d056b371828bc26 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u02156d970bd4b0735d056b371828bc26 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u02156d970bd4b0735d056b371828bc26:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u02156d970bd4b0735d056b371828bc26 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u02156d970bd4b0735d056b371828bc26 .u02156d970bd4b0735d056b371828bc26-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u02156d970bd4b0735d056b371828bc26:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Disadvantages of Homeschooling vs Traditional Educations EssayGender equity and child labor issues in the garment industry have also emerged asan increasing concern of sweatshop-opposed human rights organizations. Of theestimated four million garment workers in China, most are women agedsixteen-to-twenty-three who have migrated from rural areas to live in small rooms in thefactory building in which they work, often with ten-or-so other laborers with whom theymust share only a few beds. Generally, these women are fired if they become pregnant orwhen they reach twenty-five and are worn down by years of working in such physicallystressful conditions. The labor forces in m any factories are comprised of children asyoung as six who are born into poor families and must lead their entire lives in the mostdismal circumstances. The poorest citizens of other countries with substantialworking-class populations like Bangladesh, the Dominican Republic, Indonesia, andPakistan exist under similar desperate conditions. The companies responsible for these excessively-capitalistic business practices arehighly visible at any shopping mall throughout the United States. The countrys largestretailer Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., which employs around 825,000 worldwide has, morethan any other company, been the posterchild for third-world labor exploitation since thedeluge of sweatshop publicity struck around five years ago. However, if anything, thecompany relies on sweatshop for the bulk of its production more now than ever before. According to a Washington Post survey, 85% of Wal-Marts private-label clothing iscurrently produced overseas, a 10% increase over 1996 levels. Large corporationsostensibly find third-world nation workforces attractive because those countries do nothave minimum-wage laws or labor unions that might interfere with maximizing profits Managers in some companies are making efforts to ameliorate the situation. Some are responding voluntarily, while others are reacting as a result of pressu re broughtto bear by human rights organizations. The National Labor Committee has coordinateddemonstrations across the United States against sweatshops, targeting Wal-Mart inparticular, in what NLC attorney Al Meyerhoff described on the organizations Web siteas a Process that makes gains at a snails pace. In addition to promoting morediscriminating shopping habits among consumers, the National Labor Committee alsowants Wal-Mart and other stores to disclose the names of all factories and locationsaround the world. This intelligence would more effectively enable human rights activiststo select target areas for future campaigns. Thus far, Wal-Mart has refused to cooperatewith this request. The profits-first corporate approach that pervades Wal-Mart managementmanifests itself distinctly in the attitude of Gerald Saganovich, 34, manager of the SanJose branch of the company. Saganovich staunchly maintains that there is nothingfundamentally unscrupulous about the companys business practices in foreign markets. Were not doing anything that a number of other big businesses arent doing, and that istrying to sustain a healthy bottom line, especially in light of the bad shape the wholeeconomys in right now, he said. Thats the nature of big business. When asked how aware he felt customers are of Wal-Marts business methodsoverseas, he responded that they are Very aware I dont think most people care verymuch, to be completely honestwere not the bad guys here, and people know that. However, in a survey of 50 different shoppers at the San Jose Wal-Mart who were read astatement describing the dire conditions faced by Burmese Wal-Mart sweatshopemployees, only 5 (10%) described themsel ves as very aware of the problem. Twenty-one (42%) were somewhat aware, and 23 (46%) were not at all aware. Ofthe 23 who were previously unaware, only 5 said the information was likely to influencetheir future buying habits. I feel bad for those people (the Burmese), but I still need tobuy myself clothes, said Ashley Donoffrio, 26, of San Jose. Wal-Mart frequently defends against champions of the anti-sweatshop movementby asserting that numerous other dominant American companies that market andmanufacture shoes and attire internationally are equally culpable. And, of course, organizations like the NLC have cited some other very prominent manufacturingcompanies for sweatshop human rights violations, including Liz Claiborne, the Gap, AnnTaylor, K-Mart, Ralph Lauren, J.C. Penny, The Limited, Guess Jeans, Esprit, Nike andAdidas. While the bulk of attention surrounding the inhumane labor practices of thesecompanies center around Asian and South American markets, some of the worstcircumstances for garment workers exist much closer to home. Because of the abundantsupply of inexpensive labor, Mexican border towns are especially popular factory sites forU.S. corporate giants. The citizens of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, a developing city near theTexas-Mexico border, are prototypical casualties of American industrys penchant forexpanding in to impoverished foreign towns. A series of factory buildings, most sportingthe names of popular U.S. brands like the aforementioned Guess, dot the townslandscape and provide subsistence-level employment for many of the citys population of1.3 million. Starting wages are $6 for a nine-hour day, a level that, despite inflation, barely exceeds that of thirty-five years ago. Cuidad Juarez native Ivan Bibriesca, who immigrated to Santa Cruz four yearsago and now works for Alvaros Steakhouse in Capitola, recalls working in the Guessplant as an excruciating experience. It was really bad there I dont think most peoplesurvived, he said. We were so close to the border, but I think most people didnt makeit. Some people tried to get (together) a union, but they got fired. .udc569c2a09d4a85b39d2c35cd5beabfa , .udc569c2a09d4a85b39d2c35cd5beabfa .postImageUrl , .udc569c2a09d4a85b39d2c35cd5beabfa .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .udc569c2a09d4a85b39d2c35cd5beabfa , .udc569c2a09d4a85b39d2c35cd5beabfa:hover , .udc569c2a09d4a85b39d2c35cd5beabfa:visited , .udc569c2a09d4a85b39d2c35cd5beabfa:active { border:0!important; } .udc569c2a09d4a85b39d2c35cd5beabfa .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .udc569c2a09d4a85b39d2c35cd5beabfa { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .udc569c2a09d4a85b39d2c35cd5beabfa:active , .udc569c2a09d4a85b39d2c35cd5beabfa:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .udc569c2a09d4a85b39d2c35cd5beabfa .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .udc569c2a09d4a85b39d2c35cd5beabfa .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .udc569c2a09d4a85b39d2c35cd5beabfa .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .udc569c2a09d4a85b39d2c35cd5beabfa .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .udc569c2a09d4a85b39d2c35cd5beabfa:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .udc569c2a09d4a85b39d2c35cd5beabfa .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .udc569c2a09d4a85b39d2c35cd5beabfa .udc569c2a09d4a85b39d2c35cd5beabfa-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .udc569c2a09d4a85b39d2c35cd5beabfa:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Christian evidences EssayIndeed, employers at border towns have consistently worked together toundermine any union movements that have materialized over the years. Invariably, thefactory managers are Americans who commute from nearby El Paso, unlike the laborers, who, for the most part, live in shanty towns without paved roads and sewers and cannoteven afford bus fare to and from work. Because these miserable conditions are prevalentthroughout Ciudad Juarez, they have earned it the nickname The Cardboard City. In any event, the problems of Ciudad Juarez lie deeper than poverty, according toBibriesca. Due to the availability of steady work in the area, there is a massive andnear-constant influx of Mexicans from the south and of deported immigrants from theUnited States, whose presence places a severe strain on the citys resources and hascaused a significant increase in its crime rate. As a consequence both of its burgeoningpopulation and its border location, Ciudad Juarez is not only a popular target for newfactories, but for drug smugglers as well. I would say most of the people there wereinvolved with drugs buying them or selling them, Bibriesca said. People neededmoney, so they sold them, and people needed to get away from how bad their life was, sothey used them. Naturally, the high level of drug activity has also resulted in an inordinate numberof drug-related crimes and murders. Because of the heavy traffic in drugs, substantialamounts of the illegal substances are left behind in the city to be consumed by the locals, many of whom seek to mask the pain of what Bibriesca describes as their impossiblelives. Directly correlated to the illegal immigration and drug smuggling is adisproportionately-high rate of rape and rape-related murders, mostly of female factoryworkers who have moved to the city from rural areas. Those who do not turn to drugs tomask the harsh reality of their existences often find consolation or escape in religion. Fittingly, while more affluent people in the United States disregard the reality ofsweatshop labor because they are preoccupied with trying to sport cutting-edge fashions, the people of Ciudad Juarez seek to disguise their realities because they are so painful. Faced with such unsettling tales of human suffering, Saganovich remains resolute:Wal-Mart is simply looking out for its best interests, and this alleged mistreatment offoreign laborers isnt anywhere near as bad as a lot of people make it out to be. Thepeople who are speaking out so strongly against us are little more than a type ofpropagandists with their own agendas. Nobody forces anyone to work anywhere, and alot of them are coming to America and making better lives for themselves. Hernandez is one of a relatively small number of lucky immigrants who haverealized a greater level of wealth and comfort in the States, but he will never forget theanguish his previous jobs brought him and his compatriots. He was looking good and obviously confident also. After passing few minutes he asked about me and thus started our interaction. He was none other than Mr. Sarath Babu, who is known as a ââ¬Å"mealionâ⬠boy. As mentioned in starting, ââ¬Å"Humble beginnings seldom payâ⬠. But E Sarath Babu will not buy that. For this 28-year-old, rags-to-riches are not just another adage. Itââ¬â¢s his very foundation of success. From a slum in Chennai to the top echelons of academia with an enrolment in chemical engineering at BITS Pilani and IIM-A, and now as the steward of his Food King Catering business, Sarath has come a long way. His humility perhaps made him reject several high-brow offers from MNCs after his MBA. That, in a way, was the genesis of Food King Catering- with paltry Rs 2,000 seed money. I was really impressed by his politeness; simplicity and clarity about his way carry forward in life. He told me that today, his food business spans six locations with a Rs. 9-crore turnover and have a plan to increase the same to Rs. 20-crore by end of the year. For Sarath, his mother, who once sold idlis on the pavements of Chennai and worked as an ayah, is a pillar of strength. ââ¬Å"Her sacrifice eggs me onâ⬠, says Sarath. Apart from bringing up four children, Sarathââ¬â¢s mother worked as a cook for the mid-day meal scheme for 11 years and got paid just a rupee each day. He was really struggled during his study period and only source of income was his motherââ¬â¢s income. He was well aware that he should do very well in his studies and get sufficient income for him as well his family. He studied hard and completed his engineering and further MBA from IIM Ahmedabad. It was the real example of success which is over coming inadequate resources. I remember that often we used to misuse the facilities we are having and complain about silly things. We have good house to reside, good cloths to wear, bycicle to ply to school and tuition and pocket money whenever demanded. Still not satisfied!!. Now I am sure that how much high the level of struggle you have in life, your progress also will be very high in life, and the same will make a strong foundation of your future life and guide you towards positive growth. Mr. Sarat still remembering that as his motherââ¬â¢s income was insufficient, she mom sought refuge in the food business to supplement her meager income. As she rolled dough in the form of idlis, dosas, bhajjis and appams, it was Sarathââ¬â¢s job to sell them in the neighbourhood. ââ¬Å"For kids living in a slum, idlis for breakfast is something very special,â⬠says Sarath even to this day. A natural entrant to the food business with acquired acumen in childhood, Sarath has trained his sight higher. From the current 250 people, heââ¬â¢s aiming to recruit 2,000 people by next year, ââ¬Å"and probably, 5,000 in the next two yearsâ⬠. This shows his vision, mission and planning accordingly. In everybodyââ¬â¢s life all should have a clarity that what should do and where we will stand after certain period. That is first set your goal, plan accordingly and act immediate. This will surely ensure your success. Initially, his catering business, with two units in Ahmedabad, was Rs 2,000-per -day in the loss. ââ¬Å"But I burnt the midnight oil literally to get a solution,â⬠Sarath told me. Itââ¬â¢s worth a mention here that Sarath spent most of his childhood in the dark, without electricity. He focused on volumes rather than simple servings, and started taking contracts from institutions and companies. Please remember that if you want to grow think big and do big. To bag an order, Sarath even slept on the platform of Mumbaiââ¬â¢s railway station. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s one of my finest nights Iââ¬â¢ve ever had,â⬠Sarath reminisces. Today, Food King is targeting 100 clients, including 50 top institutions and 50 corporates for the snacks business - South Indian, North Indian and Chinese food. Food business is not just about selling but also taking care of quality and the people associated with it, Sarath points out. He now envisions FoodKingââ¬â¢s Palace (food malls) across cities where all kinds of Indian food would be served at ââ¬Å"economical ratesâ⬠. And how does he manage his team? ââ¬Å"I ask them to write their dreams on a piece of paper and advise them to think of developing themselves,â⬠says Sarath. As mentioned before, think big, plan and act. You are the best judge of you, not any one else. Make clear strategy and homework before getting in to anything in life. The will boost your morale and confidence level. I was indeed impressing upon how he is taking advantage of reverse situations also. Is he really worried about inflation or price-rise in food products? When most of the restaurants have increased their prices, Sarath sees an opportunity to serve at a cheaper price. ââ¬Å"Sourcing from one place makes a lot of difference. I will tap this opportunity,â⬠says Sarath. Today, he drives a Chevrolet to take his mother for a ride to oversee his business units in Chennai. ââ¬Å"Next, I want to build a house for my mother,â⬠says Sarath. Remember- donââ¬â¢t panic on when adverse situations happens in life, treat it as an opportunity and learn to convert the same in to success. I still remember this peculiar person I met during my journey which has really improved my thought process and given me a clear cut clarity how to think, plan and act on the things we want to do in life. Access to the Internet and the dental website will need the use of internet enabled devices and the use of the internet. The above mentioned are expensive and thus the social, economic factors of the people should be considered when developing the website. There may be cases where the access to the Internet in some places is restricted and thus the people seeking the dental bookings will suffer. Itââ¬â¢s also possible to have internet firewalls and proxy servers that specifically target dental websites. The general feeling of people using the system might get the thought of the lack of trust in the system as psychologically they are used to the face to face doctor appointments and reservations. Others may feel that their privacy is being watched by a third party that they do not wish to disclose their information to. It is possible that the culture subjugates women and thus may deny them access to the internet and thus the service to the dental clinics. As an aspect of the ethical security, the information of the clients and of the doctors can be comprised by hackers or viruses and faults in the operations of the IT system running the Website. For that reason therefore, dating in my culture is quite different from dating in the American culture- in my culture, rarely do the dating couple express their romantic feelings in public as is the case in American culture. Again, in socializing, the people of culture behave quite differently from the American people. This is because the people of my culture considers the community to be more important than the individual, for that reason, therefore, the people of my culture are quite united as a community, unlike the American people who are individualistic and who regard the individual to be more important than the community/society. Answer: There are two main situations in which I felt completely misunderstood when I arrived in America. In the first situation, on the first day of my arrival in America, I extended my hand in greetings to all the people I interacted with at the airport. To my surprise, many of the people I extended hands to in greetings looked at me suspiciously and they did not shake my hands; I really felt misunderstood by these people and ever since I wait for the people to first extend their hands in greetings before I extend my hand and shake them in greetings. In the second incident, on my second week in America, I held my friendââ¬â¢s hand, my compatriot mr. Eric Odhiambo, as we were walking along the road; to our surprise, the people looked at us suspiciously. I later learnt that the people who looked at us suspiciously thought that we were gays; in my culture, holding hands among people of the same sex is never associated with gayism or lesbianism. I really felt so much misunderstood in this incident. These abstract concepts include things like being, knowing, substance, cause, identity, time, and space. Over the years I have asked myself numerous questions pertaining to metaphysics. Things such as what is real? How do things such as our souls or even fate work? Do we determine our own fate or is it predetermined for us? Most people, including myself, ask a majority of these questions when they leave the nest. When I was graduating high school, I had no clue what the ââ¬Å"real worldâ⬠was like. My parents paid the bills, provided for me, and put the roof over my head. As we graduate, you ask who are your ââ¬Å"realâ⬠friends? More importantly what is real in general? Whatââ¬â¢s a real job? As you grow older, you can reflect on what was real as a child, and I have come to the conclusion that everybodyââ¬â¢s idea of real changes along with your age and lifestyle. For example when somebody passes away and youââ¬â¢re young, you donââ¬â¢t question if itââ¬â¢s real, but as you age you canââ¬â¢t believe when something so tragic happens and you question it. People do this every day, and for reasons that only they can explain. People talk about the spiritual world openly, but most have never experienced it. So, with that being the case it is hard to determine whether or not it is more or less real that the physical world. Thatââ¬â¢s one of those questions that as of right now I donââ¬â¢t have the answer to. I believe in the spiritual world whole heartedly, but to say itââ¬â¢s any more or less real is hard for me because I have only experienced the physical world. As of right now, I would say that they are equally real, but that is just my opinion. Going along with that, everyone has a soul, but does it live outside the body before we pass? I donââ¬â¢t believe so. As a Christian, we pray for the Lord to take our soul when we pass, and to protect it while we are alive. Our soul exits the body when we are done on Earth. Fate is a very complex subject. I believe that everyone has an idea of their ultimate fate. This doesnââ¬â¢t mean however that that is how it will end up, or that the step along the way will line up with your plan. For example, when someone dies, people say it must have been fate. I think that things like this are determined by Him, not us. When people say that when they fall in love that itââ¬â¢s fate, but that is determined by us making it free will. Therefore, I believe that our lives are determined by our own free will and fate. Epistemology is basically how we determine if something is a belief or an opinion. Some things are taught to us after they have been investigated, but other things are made up in our minds or families. If you ever look at the actual definition for knowledge it is pretty loosely written. Therefore, knowledge doesnââ¬â¢t have to be true. Your knowledge is determined by you. There are universal examples of knowledge in my opinion. However, since knowledge can be false itââ¬â¢s hard to say if others would believe the same. For example, 2+2=4 that seems like it would be true everywhere, might not be. Someone might be think 2+2=something other than 4. 1. Epistemology: * Is all knowledge subjective, or are there some universal truths? * What is the relationship between faith and reason? * What can artificial intelligence teach people about knowledge? * What are the limits of human understanding? 2. Ethics: * What is the right thing to do? * What does it mean to be a good person? * Does virtue lead to happiness? * Do the ends justify the means, or is a virtuous action virtuous in and of itself? * How does living in a society affect morality? * Is morality culturally based, individually based, or is there a universal morality? 3. Aesthetics: * What is beautiful? * Is beauty truly in the eye of the beholder, or are there some things that all cultures find beautiful? * What is the purpose of art? * How can a piece of art be successful or valuable? Does beauty matter? 4. Political philosophy: * What is the best kind of government? * How much power should the government have? * What kind of people should be in power? * How involved should the common citizen be in government? 5. Social philosophy: * How should humans behave in a society? * Do people give up certain rights when they choose to live in a society? * How do social values affect individual beliefs? Do people behave differently in a crowd than they would individually? * How does society affect language and other types of communication?
